Sevtopolis Article

When thinking of a name for my company, I knew I wanted something that would remind me of my roots, and also be a symbol of the place where I was born and raised: a small and charming town in Bulgaria called Kazanlak. Near the town of Kazanlak, lie the ruins of the ancient Sevtopolis city, also called Seuthopolis. The ancient city of Sevtopolis, a Hellenistic- type city, was founded in 323 BC by the Thracian king, Sevt III. Sevtopolis was a small city, but it is retaining some of the most precious data about the life and the culture of the Thracians. Its ruins suggest that Sevtopolis was the political, economic, and cultural center of the Thracian state.”

This is quite interesting, tell us more. Is Sevtopolis a tourist attraction today?

“No. The city was discovered and explored during the construction of a new dam 60 years ago.Unfortunately, after the dam was filled with water, the first and the best preserved Thracian city remained on the bottom of the artificial lake.
Despite being under water a number of decades, the city remains remarkably well preserved. Now over half a century later, there is an architectural plan that may help the city reappear from the bottom of the lake.”

Can you tell us more about the restoration project?

"Actually the project is very exciting. It will be something you don't see every day: a town built in the middle of a lake, not on an island, but actually below water level. A huge circular dike will be built around the ruins. People will be able to access the city by boat. This project requires a significant amount of capital, but the mistake from the past can be corrected today and Sevtopolis can be returned into the treasure house of world cultural heritage! Some foreign companies have shown interest towards subsidizing the renovation of the antique city. Once reconstructed, I am confident it will attract many tourists.”
